Metal framing skills are in sharp demand, and the Hawai`i Carpenters Union has taken aggressive steps to address this need. Many craftworkers are already being trained in this skill through our journey-level training program and plans are underway for a new training center.

Those new to carpentry can begin their careers with us through our Apprenticeship Program.

Develop your skills while building a quality life for you and your family.

Journey and Allied Craftworkers

We welcome journey workers who are:

  • carpenters
  • drywall workers and lathers
  • garage door specialists
  • laborers
  • shop specialists
  • tapers
  • residential carpenters
  • residential drywall workers
  • residential laborers
  • truss workers
  • warehousemen

As a general rule, journey workers must have a minimum of 8,000 hours of field work in the required trade. Our innovative training program for journey-level workers can supplement your skill set to meet project requirements. Those new to carpentry or drywall can begin their careers with us through our Apprenticeship Program.

In addition to carpenters and drywall workers, we serve allied craftworkers such as laborers. Allied craftworkers must have a minimum of 2,000 hours of field work. We also serve non-construction trades including Convention Center workers and Manufacturing workers.

Becoming a Union Member

Join the Hawai`i Carpenters Union and experience the many benefits of membership. Here are the steps:

  1. Initial Evaluation
We recruit journey workers and allied craftworkers monthly. An applicant who has no prior affiliation with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters must apply in person and complete an Experience Evaluation form at the Dues Office prior to the interview. Resumes and letters of references are encouraged but not necessary.

  2. Interview
Once the evaluation form is completed, the applicant will be scheduled for an interview. On O’ahu, interviews are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at the Hawai`i Carpenters Union building. For interview schedules on the neighbor islands, you must contact the respective island offices.

  3. Orientation
Following the interview, qualified applicants are scheduled for an orientation. Orientations are held on the third Wednesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Hawai`i Carpenters Union building.

  4. Membership Fees
After the orientation, interested applicants can complete the membership applicant form and pay the required fees to join the Hawai`i Carpenters Union. An applicant is not obligated to join the Carpenters Union.
